ELECTRONICS CHARTS

Electronic Charts, formally known as Electronic Navigational Charts (ENCs), are official digital nautical charts approved by IMO and used in ECDIS. Under SOLAS Chapter V, ENCs provide real-time, accurate navigational information and are mandatory for vessels fitted with ECDIS, supporting safe and efficient navigation.

What is an Electronic Navigational Chart (ENC)?

An ENC is an official digital chart issued by or on behalf of a government hydrographic office and designed for use in ECDIS.

Yes. SOLAS Chapter V, Regulation 19 mandates the use of ENCs on vessels required to carry ECDIS.

Yes. When using type-approved ECDIS with up-to-date ENCs and backup arrangements, paper charts are not required.

ENCs are issued by national hydrographic offices and coordinated through IHO, making them IMO-recognized official charts.

ENCs are updated electronically via weekly or frequent updates, ensuring compliance and accuracy without manual corrections.

  • ENC: Vector chart, SOLAS-approved, mandatory with ECDIS

  • RNC: Raster chart, scanned image, not accepted as primary navigation under SOLAS

  • If ENC coverage is unavailable, official paper charts or RNCs (with approval) may be used temporarily as permitted by the flag administration.

PSC inspectors verify:

  • Valid ENC licenses

  • Latest updates applied

  • ECDIS performance and alarms

  • Backup navigation arrangement

Yes. ENCs must be properly licensed for the vessel’s trading area and kept valid at all times.

Outdated ENCs can result in navigational errors, PSC deficiencies, detention, and increased accident risk

Conclusion

Electronic Charts (ENCs) are SOLAS-mandated, IMO-approved navigational tools for ECDIS-equipped vessels. Maintaining valid licenses, full coverage, and up-to-date corrections ensures regulatory compliance and enhances navigational safety.
